Tropical style evokes a feeling of island tranquility, with its roots buried deep in the Caribbean and Hawaiian islands. When a room is decorated with Hawaiian style, you should feel as if a beautiful blue ocean and lush vegetation is just beyond the window sill.

Colors of the tropics are vibrant, often with bright floral patterns on window treatments and furniture. Vivid yellows, reds and oranges are often used as primary colors with whites and greens used subtly in the background.

Furniture is often wicker with colorful floral patterned cushions. Teak furniture is often used for decorating outside areas with a tropical flare, or as end tables for interior decorating. Light colored hardwood floors such as Beachwood make an excellent addition to any tropical décor.

Brilliant colored flowers such as Orchids or Red Protea add life to a tropical room, a palm trees (whether real or artificial) set in the corner make a perfect backdrop. Tiki statues, driftwood, and other tropical wood carvings add a native flare to your tropical décor. Rock or bamboo fountains can enhance the atmosphere of any tropical room by adding the natural tranquility of soothing water sounds. Add foliage around your fountain to give the appearance of a hidden waterfall like those found in tropical rainforests.

Coral and shell handicrafts, picture frames and knickknacks are a must for giving the impression of a nearby ocean. Nautical items such as boat replicas and fishing accessories should not be used in tropically decorated rooms, as they evoke a separate style.

If you enjoy wildlife, a birdcage set back into your foliage with a colorful parrot or parakeet offers a stunning focal point. A saltwater aquarium with colorful tropical fish also adds a dramatic touch to any tropical décor.
