Egyptian styling evokes a sense of ancient mystique, characterized by a once great civilization rooted by Gods and Goddesses. One should feel the grandeur of an Egyptian king or queen when setting foot in the room, surrounded by primitive relics and artifacts.

Egyptian styling often uses gold and black as primary colors with pale colors and sandstone used subtly in the background. When decorating with Egyptian style, black leather furniture is a good choice, as it has the rich color and sleek texture reminiscent of the Egyptian culture. Try to stay away from using light colored wood furniture, or too much wood furniture in general. Bronze and gold accented furniture, or sandstone textured furniture typically works better with this style. Depending on the room your designing, either a black marble floor, or deep colored hardwood (cherry or dark stain) are good choices. Marble can also be used in your Egyptian room as shelves, tabletops, or décor accents.

Hieroglyphics are often used when decorating with this style. Hieroglyphics are descriptive symbols which the Egyptians used as a form of ancient storytelling. Hieroglyphs consist of three kinds of glyphs: phonetic glyphs, including single-consonant characters that functioned like an alphabet; logographs, representing morphemes; and determinatives, or ideograms, which narrowed down the meaning of a logographic or phonetic word. As writing developed and became more widespread among the Egyptian people, simplified glyph forms developed, resulting in the priestly and commoner scripts. These variants were also more suited than hieroglyphs for use on papyrus. Hieroglyphic writing was not, however, eclipsed, but existed along side the other forms, especially in monumental and other formal writing.

Portrayals of Egyptian Gods and Goddesses are also common when decorating with Egyptian style. A partial listing of the most popular Egyptian Gods and Goddesses is shown below:

Amen: The Hidden One, a primordial creation-deity
Anubis: Egyptian god of the dead
Bast: Egyptian cat goddess
Bes: Egyptian dwarf god believed to guard against evil spirits and misfortune
Chons: Egyptian moon god
Geb: God of the Earth
Isis: Egyptian mother goddess
Maat: Egyptian goddess of truth and justice
Nephthys: Egyptian goddess of the dead
Nut: Egyptian goddess of the sky and of the heavens
Osiris: Egyptian god of the underworld and of vegetation
Re: Egyptian sun god
Sobek: Egyptian crocodile god
Taweret: Hippopotamus goddess and protective deity of childbirth
Thoth: Egyptian moon god

Egyptian wall art and statues are readily available, depending on your particular tastes and interests. Many prefer reproduction stone wall art which gives the appearance of an ancient Egyptian artifact. Busts of the many Kings, Queens and Egyptian deities make a perfect ornament for any niche or end table. Other décor, whether purchased or created, can be filled with sand to propogate the feeling of a hot Egyptian desert. Large vases also work well in Egyptian rooms, and can be filled with sea grass or other dried plants.
